There's a lot going on in this picture. Let's go with...rooftops. They come in all shapes and sizes; in assorted colors, textures, and angles. All are the icing on the cake...with the bold, pitched high, to accommodate and impress; and the unobtrusive, slung low, to harmonize and conform. These are all tangibles, though...it's more interesting to talk about the intangibles.
Roofs serve to protect...our families and our investment. Some families thrive under their chosen rooftop...how lovely, if that could be our norm.
Other roofs protect the bullies and the bullied, those learning to walk for the first time, and those learning to walk again. Some roofs pull double-duty, protecting extended family members who have come together...out of want, or out of necessity. There is protection for those needing care, and protection for those providing care. Sometimes these double-duty roofs look worn and tired. They're faded, worn thin, and curled on the edges. The money isn't there to spruce them up...to make them stylish and au courant. They're appreciated, though, and thought about, often. It's hoped that they'll make it...yet another year.
Yes, there are roofs that protect the happy, the well-adjusted, and the hopeful. The roof next door may shelter the bitter, the maladjusted, and the despondent. Those who cower, and hide...with no hope, other than to make it through the day. Some roofs harbor those with ill-intent...the harsh and the angry...those with hurtful words, and hidden secrets...never to be shared.
There are secrets, though, beneath every rooftop...along with frustrations, insecurities, and worries. There is no perfect...around the corner, across the street, or next door. How lucky we are, to find shelter, comfort and, hopefully, the feelings of contentment and fulfillment, beneath our rooftops. How lovely it would be, if this was the norm...around the corner, across the street, and next door.
