The Venerable and Iconic, Wisconsin Supper Club

The presentation was so much more lovely, than this post-meal-gluttonous-looking affair, that I decided to capture. But really, what tells the story better...beautifully round, perfectly-shaped butter balls, or butter smeared with abandon, all over one's knife? The person to my left, clearly loved his ribs, and what a better testament to that fact, than bones stripped bare? The onion rings were so good, some were saved for that inevitable later-in-the-night forage through the refrigerator. In reality, though, they were eaten in the car on the way home.

Supper Clubs. Supper Clubs in Wisconsin. If you've been, I need not say more. Where else can you "go as you are," and not feel out of place, dining next to a table of blue-haired sophisticates? You can order lobster by the tail or the tank, and, if you're really lucky, tonight's special might just be prime rib.

I've read of some supper clubs that have had to close, because a generation, or two, after mine, aren't as appreciative of this Wisconsin icon...the Supper Club. Sad, that.

If you're a fan, you can't go wrong with these three lovely coffee table books. I have to recommend them all. Not only do they whet your appetite, but they can lead you to that supper club just down the road, around the corner, or, to the promise of that supper club waiting, at the end, of a lovely day trip.

Cheers!
