She walked, probably the equivalent of two blocks, with coins in her pocket and a resolve in her step. It was hot out, for sure. Iowa summers can get hot. Sometimes, she'd pretend she was a chocolate chip cookie, baking in the sun. No kidding...she did. Somehow, it made the heat tolerable, to think of chocolate chip cookies.
She was glad she had shoes on, as that pavement was hot. Like, really hot. Back then, there were no signs in stores, indicating they didn't want your money, if you weren't wearing a shirt or shoes. SO, I guess, shoes were optional, but the heat of the day made the decision a no-brainer.
There wasn't a bell on the door to let anyone know she had arrived, but the owner of the store heard her come in, so he walked into the store from his house, to see how he could help her. This store was attached to his house...one of those corner store/houses that you see now and then, and wonder what the heck it was, back in the day.
She knew what her mission was, and picked out her lime green popsicle, without hesitation. After she completed her transaction, she tore off the paper and threw it in the wastebasket by the door. Then, she started her walk back to grandma and grandpa's house. She walked slowly, savoring her lime stick of ice on a stick. The problem was...she couldn't keep up with the heat. If you bite it off, it's almost gone. Nothing wrong, with letting it drip down your arm a little if you can't keep up. So, she did.
Anyway, a memory that takes me back a ways, and lime popsicles? Forever and always, I love them.
