I Don't Know Art-Speak

Art...in the world of art and artists, I don't know the art-speak, the jargon, or whatever you call it in that world.  I know what style of art I like, and artists whose work I'm drawn to, but I wouldn't know how to talk to someone who "knows" art extensively...you know what I mean? And, there's the question..."Does art imitate life, or does life imitate art?" While many ponder that, I'll go with art, imitating life...no question about that, in my mind.

In life, I'm drawn to the real, not someone's interpretation of "real." I love a panoramic view of rolling, grassy, green hills...as far as the eye can see. One set of my grandparents lived in Iowa, where from their orchard, that's what I saw. If I were to have my ashes scattered, it would be in that orchard. But, alas, the orchard (beautiful, and full of apple trees), was an extra lot that my grandparents owned, and now, a lovely house sits there...apple trees are long gone.

Me in the in the orchard, and said rolling hills...behind the trees

I can't help but compare the green, grassy, rolling hills to the majestic mountains that one looked out at from my other set of grandparents' front yard. Pikes Peak, in all its glory...right there in front of their house. Far enough away that one could see the entire mountain, but close enough to be there in half an hour, or less...depending on traffic through Colorado Springs. Both...stunning views, but the green, rolling hills, to me...absolute perfection.

A little off course there, I guess, but it speaks to my preferences in art...not impressionism or surrealism...it's realism that I love. How lucky we are, that there are so many talented artists in this world, who provide us with music, paintings, writings...that inspire, take us to a place we long to be, bring us peace, or whatever it might be that we're looking for. Maybe it takes us there, or maybe it brings us closer.

I really do love paintings by Andrew Wyeth and Edward Hopper. Not really fond of nudes, but they do have an audience. Hopper's and Wyeth's paintings always take me to the scene depicted...always.  Scenes painted by Hopper often show "pensive" to perfection, and paintings by Wyeth...touch my soul.
