The Muffin

It had been months since I had eaten one of these. My favorite muffin...a combination of pumpkin and chocolate chips. It may not sound appealing to everyone, but it's good, people...very good. I found a recipe online that reminded me a LOT of this muffin, so I can make my own now, but seldom do.

AND, as you can see, I don't make the recipe as muffins, but 3 small loaves of pumpkin/chocolate chip bread. Anyway, with that out of the way now, I'll continue.

My husband and I were at the farmer's market this morning, and my goal was to buy a couple of these...one for each of us, gently pull the top off...eat that right away, and save the rest for later. Well, that didn't happen. It had been a while (what can I say), SO, I tore the top off, savored that, then ate the rest of my muffin. Just as I finished, a young man on a bicycle crossed in front of us, into an empty parking lot.

We knew immediately that he was an unhoused individual...you know...sometimes you can tell. SO, I rolled down my window, and held out my husband's muffin for him to take. I told him that he would enjoy it, and that we bought it just for him. He gave me a big smile, and a soft thank-you. We, then, drove away. He, then, rode away.

My husband didn't get upset...at all, as something like this has happened before. He, found two ten dollar bills in a park (folded together), as we were out for an early morning walk. There was no one around, who could have recently dropped it, so he walked it over to a dug-out where a young man had (obviously) just spent the night, and gave the money to him. I wrote a blogpost about that...I'll link it.

We don't, typically, give money to those who are unhoused, but it was "found" money, so we figured maybe it was one of those things that was "supposed" to happen. You know. As I wrote in my previous blogpost, we've given food before, as we've walked by, but never money. Sometimes, I'll buy a sandwich or a small salad at our downtown grocer, and leave it with someone who looks like they might be hungry. It's easy to just walk by, hand it to them, and just mention that I wasn't hungry after all.

Anyway, it was a beautiful day for a walk, so we took a total of 3...each one getting a little shorter. In Wisconsin, winter is long, and summer is gorgeously stunning...though, never long enough. Our walks today, made me realize that I have no bionic, or replaced parts. I have pins or screws, or whatever they are, after a broken ankle, but I've been lucky, otherwise. A sore knee today, makes me realize that my days of just being able to use what I was born with, might be nearing an end. Our son-in-law is an MD, and he said I should get it X-rayed...we'll see.

I'll keep you posted.
